Pia Raanani, MD, head of the Institute of Hematology at the Davidoff Cancer Center at the Rabin Medical Center in Israel, shared her experiences as a physician-scientist navigating the challenges of war during the 66th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exposition.
Dr. Raanani described the threats, including air raid sirens interrupting medical procedures, and sleepless nights due to attacks reaching Tel Aviv. She spoke about continuing her work as both a clinician and a leader in medical education.
As the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO) ambassador to Israel since 2016, Dr. Raanani has brought young physicians to the SOHO Annual Meetings to present abstracts and build professional connections. In May 2023, she organized a SOHO Israel meeting, which included a hybrid platform and drew 300 participants. Following the October 2023 escalation of conflict, Dr. Raanani adjusted the event to feature virtual and in-person speakers.
