In this first video, part of an educational series on myelodysplastic syndromes with SOHO young investigators, Rami Komrokji, MD, provides an introduction to MDS, including the disease epidemiology, underlying pathogenesis, and diagnostic considerations.
Dr. Komrokji discusses the role of genetic mutations, age-related changes in hematopoiesis and the progression from lower-risk to higher-risk disease. He also reviews diagnostic criteria and the distinction between MDS and related conditions, including clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance and idiopathic cytopenia of undetermined significance.
