MDS Case Study Videos Video Interviews Young Investigator Program

MDS risk stratification and treatment decision-making

In this video, which is part of an educational series on myelodysplastic syndromes with SOHO young investigators, Rami Komrokji, MD, leads a discussion on risk stratification and clinical decision-making in MDS, including the use of IPSS-R and IPSS-M, treatment strategies and the timing of stem cell transplantation.

This is part two of an earlier video in the same series. The first video covered MDS disease epidemiology, underlying pathogenesis, and diagnostic considerations.

In this video, the panel addresses the following questions:

  • When a patient progresses or treatment fails, should IPSS-R or IPSS-M risk scores be recalculated based on newly acquired mutations or cytopenias?
  • For a fit patient with lower-risk MDS, should stem cell transplantation be considered early or deferred?
  • Could early treatment with luspatercept reduce clonal evolution in MDS?
  • Should patients with predominantly thrombocytopenia and those with predominantly anemia be managed differently, even when their risk scores are similar?

Also in this video, Guillermo Garcia-Manero, MD, and Uma Borate, MD, join the group discussion.
