‘No hesitation holding therapy’ — managing ocular adverse events in myeloma

This video is part of a series of videos on the DREAMM studies.

In this segment of the roundtable series, the panelists, discusses the management of ocular adverse events associated with belantamab mafodotin, including dosing strategies, approaches to mitigating ocular toxicity and practical considerations for coordinating care with eye care specialists.

Aside from its ocular toxicity, Dr. Hans Lee described belantamab mafodotin as a generally well-tolerated therapy.

Management can include dose holds, dose delays and potentially dose reductions.

“I really have no hesitation about holding therapy.” Dr. Lee said.

Dr. Meletios A. Dimopoulos also summarized his team’s management strategies, which include using patient-reported symptoms to help guide the care team’s decision-making.

“We recommend artificial tears,” Dr. Dimopoulos said, adding that his team may also hold the drug when needed and provide patients with practical advice for managing ocular symptoms.

The panelists also agreed on the importance of coordinating with an eye care specialist.

“It’s really important to have an eye care specialist as a partner,” Dr. Lee said.

The panel was moderated by Dr. Saad Usmani, chief of the myeloma service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and featured panelists Dr. Meletios A. Dimopoulos, professor and chairman of the Department of Clinical Therapeutics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine; Dr. Hans Lee, director of myeloma research at Sarah Cannon Research Institute; and Dr. Ajay Nooka, clinical member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
