ARUP Laboratories has launched a new clinical spectral flow cytometry assay for minimal residual disease profiling in multiple myeloma.
In a press release by ARUP Laboratories, the company stated that the test marks the first clinical use of spectral flow technology by a large US reference laboratory to detect low levels of disease with higher sensitivity than conventional methods. By evaluating 18 markers simultaneously from a single sample, the assay can identify as few as 14 neoplastic cells in 5 million analyzed cells while requiring less specimen volume.
The assay supports treatment evaluation and risk stratification by detecting residual disease or early reemergence that standard testing might miss.
“We are harnessing a technology that’s relatively new in the diagnostic space,” said Madhu Menon, MD, PhD, FCAP, FASCP, head of clinical operations for Hematopathology at ARUP. “By offering a superior technique with higher sensitivity, we will directly impact a subset of patients who otherwise would not have been identified as MRD positive.”
