Between 2006 and 2019, the proportion of all pneumonia-related hospital admissions involving patients with multiple myeloma (MM) increased by 66.43% (P<0.0001), and MM was independently associated with increased in-hospital mortality (odds ratio [OR], 1.61).
Jackson Brunner, MD, of the University of Michigan, and colleagues presented the findings at the 2026 SOHO Annual Meeting.
The researchers used data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample from 2006 to 2022 to identify hospital admissions in adults with MM.
They observed the following increases during that time period:
- Deaths: 26.50% (P=0.0013)
- Hospital days: 57.76% (P<0.0001)
- Costs: 59.01% (P<0.0001)
Mechanical ventilation rates were stable, while admission volume, length of stay, and costs of COVID-19-related admissions among patients with MM increased significantly from 2021 to 2022 (P<0.0001) but not from 2020 to 2021.
Frailty, as assessed by the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS), independently predicted mortality (OR, 1.08 per HFRS point). Black patients with MM experienced a greater increase in pneumonia-related admissions (P<0.0001), with an annual increase in odds of 4.8% (OR, 1.05).
These specific disparities “warrant further investigation into preventative strategies, including vaccination, immunoglobulin replacement, and antimicrobial prophylaxis,” the authors concluded.
